Numa sociedade globalizada e em rede, onde as barreiras entre espaço e tempo se difundem, novos fenómenos sociais surgem associados à própria evolução do mundo. O surgimento da internet e as novas ferramentas de interação, tais como as redes sociais possibilitam a partilha de mensagens, interesses, ideais e até sentimentos, como nunca antes vimos, permitindo a difusão global dos mesmos e a agregação de pessoas pelos seus próprios interesses. Ultimamente, e relacionados com os atuais problemas sociais, os eventos que envolvem multidões tornam-se, cada vez mais presentes na nossa sociedade. Associado a estas novas agregações de pessoas, um novo fenómeno de multidão emerge, denominado mediated crowds que se caraterizam por serem um fenómeno onde se erguem multidões espontâneas, agregadas, organizadas e coordenadas a partir dos social media e das redes sociais. Estas ocupam uma nova conceção de espaço público, disfrutando da invisibilidade das redes para se juntarem e organizarem e, beneficiam da utilização do espaço físico para se fazerem mostrar e levarem a cabo os seus intentos. Para além do impacto que uma multidão tem só por si associado, também certos agentes estranhos, normalmente pertencentes a fações mais radicais, acabam por se aproveitar das mesmas para destabilizarem e comprometerem a segurança interna. Nesta senda, torna-se imprescindível a compreensão das mediated crowds, para percebermos o impacto que estas têm na ação policial, nomeadamente na ação da Polícia de Segurança Pública.
In a globalized and networked society where the barriers between time and space become widespread, new social phenomena emerge associated to the evolution of times. The rise of internet and the new interaction tools, such as social networking, enable the sharing out of messages, interests, ideas and emotions as never seen before, allowing their global dissemination and people’s aggregation by their own interests. Lately, and related to current social problems, events involving crowds become increasingly present in our society. Connected to these aggregations of people a new phenomenon of masses emerge, designed mediated crowds that can be characterized as a phenomenon where spontaneous crowds, aggregated, organized and coordinated from the social media and the social networks. These take a new notion of public space making the best use of the networks invisibility to join and organize and using physical space to show themselves and carry out their objectives. Besides the impact a crowd has by itself, also many strange agents among the most radical factions take advantage to destabilize and forfeit homeland security. So, it is urgent to understand these mediated crowds to realize their impact in the police action, in particular in the Polícia de Segurança Pública action.
