Abstract(s)
Eating behavior and eating habits have a special impact on health promotion and, in turn, on disease prevention. There is a quantum of interrelated factors, of internal and external origin to the organism, which influence eating behaviors and habits, namely the perception of body image and emotional regulation. The military environment presents several unique aspects of the profession that may have implications for eating behaviors and eating habits and, in turn, for health. The present study aimed to: 1) characterize a sample of military personnel of the Portuguese Navy in terms of sociodemographic data; 2) characterize eating behavior, body image perception and emotional regulation; 3) analyze whether there is an association in a sample of Portuguese Navy military personnel between eating behavior, emotional regulation and body image perception; and, 4) analyze the association between eating behavior, body image perception and emotional regulation taking into account sociodemographic variables. This investigation involved the participation of 192 male biological soldiers from the Portuguese Navy with a mean age of 45 years (SD=8.8). A questionnaire was organized comprising sociodemographic data and three psychological assessment instruments: Tests of Eating Attitudes; Short Version of the Male Body Dissatisfaction Scale and Emotional Regulation Scale. The results of the present study demonstrated a statistically significant negative association between eating behavior and body image perception, but there was no statistically significant correlation between eating behavior and emotional regulation in this sample of military personnel. This study made it possible to obtain exploratory data on the military population, as well as on variables of eating behavior, body image satisfaction and emotional regulation in military personnel, which may be indicators of possible future lines of intervention to help promote healthier eating behavior in this population, as well as greater adoption of health behaviors.
