Abstract(s)
Although dental emergencies very rarely put a patient’s life at risk, they occur somewhat frequently in dental clinics. This does not mean that are not serious, painful and capable of causing great discomfort. On a first approach, the patient is in pain and may present a pulp, periodontal or traumatic condition, which demands clinical and/or surgical intervention. The emergency care’s main goal is to reduce the patient’s pain, eliminating the etiology, restoring function and leading the patient towards an appropriate definitive treatment. Usually, emergencies happen most frequently to people who don’t routinely schedule check-ups at the dental clinics, even though they may also happen during or after dental treatment. They lead not only to the need for work leave or school leave, but also to a decrease of the patient’s quality of life. Due to the wide variety of possible complications, it is essential that dentists know exactly how and when to act, mastering with competence the most current medical procedures and having the adequate knowledge which allows them to relieve the patient of the pain that brought him to the emergency services, avoiding unnecessary hardships during the clinical execution.
