Abstract(s)
Patient safety is one of the main areas of concern at global and national level in the health sector, as it involves the quality of care provided and the prevention of avoidable harm. One of the factors that jeopardises client safety is a failure in communication between healthcare professionals during moments of transition of care, i.e. when the client is transferred between different levels or units of care. The literature shows that one of the main sources of sentinel events is ineffective communication between healthcare professionals, especially in client care transitions. Data from the Directorate-General for Health indicate that communication failures can affect 70 per cent of surgical clients. With the annual growth in surgical procedures around the world, the complexity of the perioperative context has increased. The perioperative nurse plays a crucial role in all stages of the surgical process. This internship report reflects a journey of clinical learning, carried out with the aim of obtaining the title of Master in Medical-Surgical Nursing, with an emphasis on the area of Perioperative Nursing, consolidating the knowledge acquired in the course's curricular units and the skills developed during the clinical internships and the research carried out. The professional internship was carried out in the contexts of the central operating theatre and the operating theatre of general surgery specialties. The internships provided a unique opportunity to acquire specific knowledge, technical skills and attitudes in a perioperative context. This report aims to demonstrate and describe the learning and skills developed in clinical practice, with the aim of mastering the general and specific competences of Medical- Surgical Nursing, in the area of the person in a perioperative situation. As part of this process of acquiring competences, the aim is to develop and implement an internship project focused on informing the transition of perioperative care in laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. This project is part of the continuous professional development of nurses, the improvement of customer satisfaction and aims to contribute to the mission of health institutions. In addition, a scoping review was carried out according to the principles recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute. This review demonstrates that the role of the perioperative nurse should be preventive, minimising the risks arising from ineffective communication in perioperative care transitions, in order to contribute to increased perioperative safety for the client and the multidisciplinary team, in line with professional ethics.
