This work aimed to conceive, implement and evaluate an intervention project in health education, within the scope of media literacy, which would integrate gender issues conveyed by the media and their contribution to the health of future teachers. To this end, a pre- and post-test questionnaire and a guide for media analysis based on two conceptual models were prepared. The first in the context of media literacy and the second on the deconstruction of gender stereotypes. The intervention involved students in the 3rd year of their degree in Basic Education at a public institution of higher education in Portugal. It included a set of six sessions, in the classroom, with an approximate duration of 60 minutes each, which aimed to develop media literacy skills and greater awareness of gender equality, through analysis and critical reflection of gender messages conveyed by the media and its effects on health. The results show: i) the improvement of skills in media literacy; ii) raising awareness of gender equality; iii) recognition of how media literacy and gender equality are addressed in initial teacher education curricula; iv) greater perception and analysis of gender messages conveyed by the media and their effects on health. It is concluded that it is necessary to invest in initial teacher training in order to enable the future implementation of actions that promote media literacy and gender equality.
