Abstract(s)
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth and can lead to tooth loss (Ximénez‐Fyvie et al., 2000). It is a disease that can have systemic implications, as well as being influenced by certain habits as well as systemic pathologies (Scannapieco & Gershovich, 2020). The sequelae of periodontitis can have repercussions not only on aesthetics but also on the function and state of the patient's oral health and may influence their quality of life (Borges et al., 2013). The main objective of this study is to study the influence of periodontal disease on the quality of life of patients and, thus, to highlight the importance of prevention and promotion of periodontal health and to highlight the role of the dentist in improving the quality of life of patients with periodontal disease by integrating patient-centred approaches, particularly through personalised treatments and in-depth discussions. To this end, a questionnaire was applied, which has already been validated in other studies, to a sample of patients from the Egas Moniz dental clinic, with the aim of evaluating the impact of periodontitis on the quality of life of patients. A questionnaire inspired by the "Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14)", a questionnaire that was used in a national study of oral health assessment, carried out by the Ministry of Health of Brazil, will be applied. This questionnaire will be amended in some respects and a part will be added on self-perception of oral hygiene. The assessment of patients' oral hygiene and the collection of socio-demographic data makes this questionnaire different from those already published. This questionnaire was applied at the first consultation immediately after the registration of clinical data. Given the samples used in the various studies on this topic, a sample of 100 patients was considered appropriate to evaluate the objective of the study.
