O cancro oral tem sido um dos grandes temas da atualidade da saúde, estando no centro de numerosos debates médicos, sociais e culturais. Nesta tese, irei abordar os aspetos sociais relacionados com a temática, orientando o presente trabalho para o tema da comunicação do cancro oral. Entre as questões que se levantam surgem algumas das que se seguem: que especificidades existem nos processos comunicacionais na saúde oral? Como anunciar uma má notícia? Existe relação entre as características comunicacionais e a adesão ao tratamento?
Atendendo à centralidade das questões referidas, assim como o meu interesse pela temática, elegi com tema da minha tese: «O cancro oral: desafios e estratégias de comunicação de uma má notícia»
Deste modo, poderemos analisar e compreender os diferentes métodos já existentes de comunicação sobre o cancro oral (Alves et al., 2019), os métodos de transmissão de informação ao público de uma faixa etária que começa logo na adolescência (que pode ser marcada pelo início do consumo de álcool, tabaco e relações sexuais, por vezes não protegidas) (Darukaradhya et al., 2023), aos doentes (Rini et al., 2019), mas também aos profissionais de saúde (Narayanan et al., 2010), de forma a transmitir as boas práticas a adotar.
Iremos igualmente procurar perceber de que forma se poderá melhorar a sensibilização a diferentes escalas (pessoais, com o apoio dos profissionais de saúde e a nível mundial) (Lin et al., 2021). E sobretudo, como a melhorar e torná-la acessível, tendo em conta parâmetros que variam em função da idade, das condições económicas, sociais e culturais (Baumann et al., 2023).
Oral cancer has been one of the major health issues of our time, standing at the center of numerous medical, social, and cultural debates. In this thesis, I will address the social aspects related to this topic, focusing this work on the theme of communication regarding oral cancer. Among the questions that arise are the following: What are the specific characteristics of communication processes in oral health? How should bad news be delivered? Is there a relationship between communication characteristics and treatment adherence? Given the central importance of these issues, as well as my interest in the subject, I have chosen the following topic for my thesis: “Oral Cancer: Challenges and Strategies for Communicating Bad News” In this way, we will be able to analyze and understand the various existing methods of communicating about oral cancer (Alves et al., 2019), the methods of conveying information to the public in an age group that begins as early as adolescence (which may be marked by the onset of alcohol and tobacco use and sexual activity, sometimes unprotected) (Darukaradhya et al., 2023), to patients (Rini et al., 2019), but also to healthcare professionals (Narayanan et al., 2010), in order to convey the best practices to be adopted. We will also seek to understand how awareness can be improved at different levels (individual, with the support of healthcare professionals, and globally) (Lin et al., 2021). Above all, we will explore how to improve and make it accessible, taking into account factors that vary according to age, economic, social, and cultural conditions (Baumann et al., 2023).
