Abstract(s)
Abstract: The border region of the Portuguese Minho Valley and the Lower Galician Minho corresponds to an area marked by the presence of diversified heritage, which once had a strategic defensive role. Such monuments are witnesses of the past, which should be respected for their historical and cultural value. Some eventually became ruins, others reached present time with different uses from the original ones. The fortifications built and/or strengthened for defense in the Restoration War characterize an era and the method of intervening on the territory in a particular way. Various conditions ā economic, cultural and social, etc. ā of the local people and of the communities that built them and use them, manifest themselves in the plurality of types. These implications resulted in a regional differentiation through the adaptation to the local specificity. Built in strategic defensive spots in national territory, on the Minho border the fortifications are symbols of a past in which they had an important role, having been essential in the consolidation, protection and delimitation of the national boundaries. They have been gradually losing their usefulness and their functional value of protection and security has been disappearing. In some cases, their use has been readapted to other purposes, in other cases they were relegated to abandonment or destruction due to a sum of related causes, presenting conservation problems. The Dissertation consists in the Project for the Rehabilitation of the S. Francisco Fortification, classified as a monument, erected in the Lovelhe village in Vila Nova de Cerveira, which had a strategic defensive role of the Nation in the Peninsular and Napoleon Wars. The focus of the Project development is to assess a more correct intervention approach in the fortification, contextualizing it as a still useful element, highlighting the relations with the area and referencing them to a new understanding of the place where it is located. A performance strategy is established, which predicts the valuation of the group in which the monument is inserted as touristic and/or cultural potential, due to its recognized quality as historical-archeological witness. The indications of the Director Plan of the Border Fortifications in the Minho Valley/Lower Minho were verified. This document of heritage promotion has contributed to increase the knowledge of the object of study, using it as a lever for the development of its understanding and other starting questions. The Fortification rehabilitation will make it possible to return that structure to the population, due to the interest it involves, in addition to its inherent symbolism and heritage relevance.
