Abstract(s)
The present investigation project will focus primarily on large scale events and touristic and cultural development of medium size cities. We will show the existing relationship between both and the potential benefits of jointly conducting them. This broader area of investigation will look at very notorious events (particularly for the fact that Coimbra was named culture capital in 2003) and the benefits derived from them (touristic and cultural development of Coimbra). Within this framework and having Coimbra as case study, we will analyze in greater detail the importance that tourism and culture have in medium size cities as well as the new tendencies of creative cities and industries. This specific project’s area is dedicated to the analysis of the touristic and cultural development model of Coimbra (since its nomination as culture capital in 2003 until now), as previously stated. As such, it is intended to ascertain in detail which touristic and cultural resources were created and/or streamlined since 2003 until nowadays, their impact on the city and local community as well as in the tourist that visit. Therefore, at the end of the project it will be possible to reach a conclusion on the extension and importance of the referred event in Coimbra (in the touristic and cultural sector). Finally, this case study will look into Coimbra’s touristic and cultural dimension after 2003, enabling us to check which touristic and cultural offer was there in 2003 and the one that nowadays exists. As investigation tools, we performed a selection of questionnaires filled in by Coimbra’s community, conducted interviews to some of the city’s leading entities in the tourist and culture sectors in 2003 and in the present year (establishing a comparison between both periods of time), assembled statistical data of both tourism and culture and analysed newspapers concerning the event (before, during and after it). The choosing of the city of Coimbra is justified not only by its notoriety, symbolism and antiquity but also for the touristic and cultural development that has been taking place in recent years, mostly by the organization of events of big notoriety. In light of these reasons, we think this is the most indicated and viable case study option for the present project. By way of conclusion, this project’s goal is to study and develop the existing connection between large scale events and touristic and cultural development of medium size cities. We seek to demonstrate its advantages and disadvantages so that we are capable of developing an analysis model that is able to potentiate the opportunities and to oppose the threats that might occur.
