Abstract(s)
dispersarem as sementes anteriormente ingeridas.
In a pasture, the seed bank in the soil can be improved through the transportation of seeds in the digestive tract of animals (endozoochory). The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomass production of the pastures at Herdade dos Cordeiros (Vila Viçosa) in three plots: Cordeiros (seeded in 2018/19), Cabriz (improved through seed transport by cattle from the Cordeiros plot), and Carvalhais (a new plot in the agricultural exploitation, which was grazed by animals from the agricultural exploitation starting in 2021/22 and also intended to be improved through endozoochory). The biomass production of the pastures was evaluated using 8 grazing exclusion cages with an area of 1m2 in each plot. Three harvests were conducted on December 1, 2021, March 1, and June 1, 2022. The fresh weight and dry weight were determined after drying at 105oC for 24 hours, and the separation into grasses, legumes, and other botanical families was performed. The total biomass production was higher in the improved plots (Cordeiros and Cabriz), with 1946 kg/ha and 2323 kg/ha, respectively, while Carvalhais produced 1239 kg/ha. The average percentage of legumes in the three harvests was higher in the Cabriz plot (26%), followed by Cordeiros (18%) and Carvalhais (10%). The Cordeiros plot had the highest percentage of other botanical families. Endozoochory can be a method for improving pastures, but a specific animal grazing plan should be implemented to achieve this objective. It is proposed that, after the seeds of the desired species have matured, the cattle graze on the improved pasture for a short period of time (1 to 2 days) and also on the pasture intended for improvement, thereby dispersing the previously ingested seeds there.
