Abstract(s)
A análise
Jorge Pinheiro, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Eduardo Batarda,
Maria José Aguiar, Gabriel Abrantes e Francisco Vidal.
Speculating on Institutional Critique in Portugal: Painting and the Modern Art Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is a dissertation developed within the Master’s programme in Design and Visual Culture. It investigates the contribution of conceptually driven painting in Portugal through the lens of Institutional Critique—a concept developed in the 1960s and its contemporary unfoldings. The analysis focuses on the collection of the Modern Art Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, framing within the scope of Institutional Critique the paintings of Paula Rego, Jorge Pinheiro, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Eduardo Batarda, Maria José Aguiar, Gabriel Abrantes, and Francisco Vidal. The research employs a theoretical and historical framework using a qualitative methodology, which includes specific analysis of selected artworks, certain manifestations of Institutional Critique, and their reverberations in Portuguese painting. It examines the role of the Modern Art Centre’s collection in strengthening the country’s art system, highlighting its influence in legitimising and valuing Institutional Critique. This study provides a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between artists and cultural institutions, and the ongoing tensions between artistic freedom and institutional constraints.
