Abstract(s)
a saúde oral.
The exponential increase of the elderly population worldwide requires special attention with regard to the quality of life of individuals in this group, which has an increasing longevity. With the increase in life expectancy of the human population, problems related to physical, mental and social well-being are increasingly related to oral health. For some elderly people, oral health problems can progress and become serious, due to the challenges they face with oral hygiene care, which end up being neglected due to physical and cognitive limitations, which makes them more fragile and dependent, making it difficult to implement good oral health care practices, as well as their visit to dental clinics. Access to oral health care services must be universal, including for people with difficulties and limitations, which may make it impossible for them to travel to a dental clinic, as is the case with many hospitalized patients or those with limited mobility, becoming care outside the dental clinic is necessary, that is, home care. Home visits are recommended by many public health systems in several countries. Thus, it is important to develop oral health care strategies aimed at the elderly population, which should focus on promoting adequate oral health care for the elderly, with priority for the removal of pain and the immediate solution of any dental emergency. Taking into account the physical restrictions of the majority of the elderly, it is also essential to develop a regular program of frequent visits by the Dentist to the nursing homes. The main goal of this narrative review is to evaluate the provision of home care in oral health to elderly people with limitations, particularly in their movement.
