The aesthetics of the smile play a significant role in quality of life, directly influencing self-esteem, emotional well-being, and social and professional relationship. The perception of an attractive smile is subjective, yet shaped by social, cultural, and demographic factors, reflecting how individuals are seen by others and how they perceive themselves within society. During childhood and adolescence, the impact of smile appearance can be more pronounced, as these life stages are marked by identity development and the pursuit of social acceptance. At this point, an excessive emphasis on aesthetics may lead to emotional and behavioral disorders, with consequences such as anxiety, low selfesteem, and difficulties related to social acceptance. In adulthood, smile aesthetics are often associated with self-confidence, competence, and professional success. Among older adults, changes in dental appearance can hinder social interaction and negatively impact quality of life. Across all age groups, aesthetic dental interventions have been shown to improve psychosocial well-being and reduce emotional discomfort related to self-image. Therefore, this dissertation aims to conduct a literature review on the psychosocial impact of smile aesthetics on patients’ quality of life across different age groups. This study seeks to understand how smile appearance influences self-esteem, social interactions, and psychological well-being. The research was carried out using scientific databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and SciELO, among others, considering publications from 2000 to 2023, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, with a focus on the most recent evidence on the subject.
