Abstract(s)
This paper belongs to the Internship Curricular Unit with a report of the Master's in Nursing with the specialization in the medical-surgical area in the oncological field. This paperās main goal is to document the and exhibit the carried out work and describe the development of the nursing specialist skills and competences as well as masterās degree competences. Pancreatic and biliary cancer are diseases associated with poor prognosis, having some of the lowest survival rates at five years. Palliative care is a key component in the management of these diseases and in the cancer treatment this type of care can be provided at any point during the continuum of care, from the moment of diagnosis to the end of life. However, caring of people with pancreatic and biliary cancer at the end of life, especially in a non-specialized multidisciplinary ward, is a challenge to health care professionals. Considering that, to contribute to improve the quality of the provided care to this population, while developing nurse specialist competences, a project was created. This project was developed while doing three internships in distinct locations. The executed activities include a scoping review, interviews, critical reflections, case studies, collaborative nurse care and the creation of a nursing practice guide. This guide was built using a nursing intervention grid, whose interventions can contribute to improve the comfort of the hospitalized people with pancreatic and biliary cancer at the end of life, and workplace educational sessions to peers about the guide were conducted. A comfort behavior checklist was also used. This checklist is based on Kolcabaās Comfort Theory, which played a major role to support this project. It is believed that these activities have contributed to the improvement of nursing care quality. The compliance with the inherent ethical principles throughout the project should be emphasized. However, some of the proposed activities werenāt executed because during the time of the internship no patients with pancreatic and biliary cancer were admitted. These activities include auditing nursing care and nurse records, and they can in the future contribute to the improvement of nursing knowledge.
