Abstract(s)
doente.
The increase in longevity, and consequently the increase in the number of patients with oncological diseases and chronic diseases, such as COPD, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, kidney failure and dementia, implies a greater number of patients in need of palliative care . Given this growing evolution and the preponderant role of palliative care in these patients, advanced training of health professionals in this area is essential. In fact, the provision of palliative care requires a great level of complexity and demand given the multiple physical, emotional, social, family and spiritual needs of the patient and family in the face of an advanced, progressive and terminal illness, and in this way, it is crucial that nurses acquire specialized skills in this area of Palliative Care. The Master's Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for People in Palliative Situations from the Porto Nursing School allowed me to develop theoretical-practical knowledge in the area of Palliative Care and helped in the process of developing skills defined by the Order of Nurses for the title Specialist Nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for People in Palliative Situations. The preparation of this internship report made it possible to demonstrate how the process of developing these skills was during the completion of a clinical internship in two Palliative Care contexts, namely, an Intra-Hospital Palliative Care Support Team and a Palliative Care Unit. This report also allowed me to deepen my knowledge and develop skills on a very pertinent topic in nursing care and Palliative Care: "The promotion of comfort in palliative patients", an area that, throughout the history of nursing, has been identified as an important element in nursing care. Authors such as Morse and Kolcaba developed theories about comfort, trying to define and explain how nurses become relevant in their promotion to patients.
