Abstract(s)
comunidade e entidades externas.
The current complexities often seen in the lives of children and young people in care requires a number of intervention strategies, particularly with regards to developing their autonomy. This study explores the views of professionals from the technical and educational teams who work in residential care homes directly with children and young people, to better understand the perceptions of those professionals about different operating model and the process of developing autonomy. To achieve the objectives created, a survey was prepared and sent to all residentialcare homes for children in Portugal, including the Azores and Madeira. This provided a representative sample consisting of 101 professionals, who are part of the care homes teams. The results suggest that despite improvements, there are still gaps to be resolved in terms of promoting autonomy, with themes of improving training, to more in-depth work with families, strengthening of external partnerships with the community, and support for young people after leaving residential care. This thesis will conclude that Social Workers have a preponderant role here; by being part of a multidisciplinary team, they can be the vital link between the formal care settings and the young people’s familiesand develop work to strengthen partnerships with the community and third-party sector, like charities or private organizations.
