A manutenção de um bom desempenho desportivo é de extrema importância para uma boa
rentabilidade desportiva e económica, para todas as entidades envolvidas no mundo dos cavalos de
desporto. A performance desportiva de um equino pode ser comprometida por por doenças músculo-
esqueléticas, sendo importante a identificação precoce, para uma intervenção atempada, garantindo
a saúde articular e a possibilidade de uma boa carreira desportiva.
As patologias articulares, entre as quais a osteoartrite e a osteocondrose, que estão interligadas, são
as principais causas de claudicação e perdas da carreira desportiva. Estas são doenças articulares ainda
que a OA, uma doença degenerativa, e a OC uma falha no processo de ossificação endocondral, sendo
que ambas afetam a cartilagem articular e estruturas ósseas subjacentes, comprometendo a saúde
articular.
Neste contexto, a presente dissertação tem como objetivo evidenciar a eficácia da ecografia como
método de diagnostico de osteocondrose /osteocondrite dissecante em cavalos de desporto, e a sua
vantagem na deteção precoce de patologias articulares. Será utilizada a revisão bibliográfica para
abordar a OC, e toda a fisiopatogenia derivada da doença, englobando também uma descrição
detalhada do método ecográfico utilizado para identificação de lesões compatíveis com OC em
articulações predisponentes à doença.
Será ainda proposto um protocolo prático e simplificado, sob a forma de uma aplicação compatível
com telemóveis, tablets ou computadores que inclui orientações da metodologia de aplicação,
diretivas de encaminhamento e plano de controlo e monitorização, numa tentativa de Detetar
precocemente alterações OA e assim, perdas económicas e de performance aos cavalos de desporto.
Irá conter também fundamentação teórica sobre a ecografia articular, bem como imagens
representativas do posicionamento da sonda e ecográficas da respetiva articulação correspondente,
para auxílio ao aplicar o protocolo.
Através do uso deste protocolo incorporado numa app, o Médico Veterinário poderá adquirir uma alta
praticabilidade, permitindo o registo de cada exame na própria aplicação no momento, informação
esta que fica automaticamente inserida numa base de dados acessível, via internet, em qualquer local.
Performance and athletic longevity are extremely important for ensuring sporting and economic profitability for all stakeholders involved in the world of sport horses. This profitability is increasingly being compromised by musculoskeletal diseases, making early identification crucial for timely intervention and, consequently, ensuring joint health and the potential for a successful athletic career. Joint pathologies, including osteoarthritis and osteochondrosis—which are interconnected—are the main causes of lameness and loss of athletic careers. These are joint diseases, although OA is a degenerative condition and OC results from a failure in the endochondral ossification process. Both, however, affect the articular cartilage and underlying bone structures, compromising joint health. In this context, the present dissertation aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of ultrasonography as a diagnostic method for osteochondrosis/osteochondritis dissecans in sport horses, as well as its advantages in the early detection of joint pathologies. A literature review will be conducted to explore OC and its associated pathophysiology, along with a detailed description of the ultrasonographic technique used to identify lesions consistent with OC in joints predisposed to the condition. A practical and simplified protocol will also be proposed, in the form of an application compatible with mobile phones, tablets, or computers. This app will include guidelines for application methodology, referral directives, and a control and monitoring plan, aiming to minimize economic losses and performance decline in sport horses. It will also include a theoretical background on joint ultrasonography, as well as representative images of proper probe positioning and corresponding ultrasound images of each joint to assist in protocol implementation. By incorporating this protocol into an app, veterinarians will benefit from enhanced practicality, enabling them to record each examination directly within the application. This data is automatically stored in an internet-accessible database, available from any location.
