Enfermagem.
Childhood obesity is one of the most frequent pathologies in paediatric age. Although it may have different starting points, obesity often develops due to non adherence to healthy lifestyles. Bearing in mind that children learn mainly by example and that the primary place for such learning is at home and within the family, it is important to intervene at the level of empowerment of parents and family, as they will be the most likely elements to influence children's health choices. The nurse should intervene early and implement strategies to promote the health and empowerment of the child and family, acting as a mediator of positive health choices and perspectives. This report aims to demonstrate the development of specialist skills, in the various dimensions of the professional practice, to provide nursing care to children/young people and families at all stages of their development and in the health-illness processes, and the development of the skills of Specialist Nurses in Child Health and Paediatrics to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent childhood obesity. Based on the philosophy of family-centred care and Nola Pender's health promotion Model, this report is also based on a methodology of critical thinking and reflective practice. This methodology aims at highlighting not only the acquired skills, but also the activities and learning experiences and their contribution to the issue in question and to Nursing.
