Within the scope of the Master’s Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the area of Perioperative Nursing Care, at the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Santa Maria, in consortium with the Escola Superior de Enfermagem São José de Cluny, during the 2024/2025, this internship report was developed on the topic “Skin Antisepsis: Developing Specialized Competencies in Perioperative Nursing Care for the Surgical Patient.” Its main objective is to demonstrate the common, specific, and master’s-level competencies achieved in the context of clinical training, with the purpose of obtaining the title of Master and Specialist Nurse in this area. The educational pathway that supports this learning process is structured in the School’s curriculum through theoretical, theoretical-practical, and clinical units, which facilitated the progressive integration of knowledge into specialized clinical practice. Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common postoperative complications, standing out for its significant negative repercussions on patient recovery, with a direct impact on family, society, and healthcare systems. Despite being multifactorial and complex, SSI prevention can achieve a reduction of up to 60% through the standardized implementation of evidence-based strategies throughout the perioperative period. Among the factors of care, the selection of the antiseptic remains controversial, as the outcomes of skin preparation may be influenced by both exposure time and the number of applications. In this context, the Specialist Nurse in perioperative care plays a central role in SSI prevention, given their ability to implement differentiated interventions focused on the quality and safety of care. It is concluded that this advanced training translates into the development of competencies that enhance the quality of multidisciplinary clinical practice and contribute to the consolidation of evidence-based practices, thereby promoting excellence, safety, and the continuous improvement of patients quality of life.
