Abstract(s)
The digital age has brought about a challenging phenomenon in romantic relationships, partner phubbing, which comprises the act of an individual being distracted by their smartphone during face-to-face communication when they are with their romantic partner (Roberts & David, 2016). Therefore, this study aimed to describe partner phubbing behaviour and relationship satisfaction in a sample of individuals living in Portugal, as well as to analyse whether the relationship between partner phubbing and relationship satisfaction is moderated by gender and age, when the duration of the relationship is controlled. To achieve these objectives, a quantitative approach was used, analysing data from an online questionnaire applied to a sample of 206 adults in a romantic relationship, aged between 19 and 78 (M = 39, SD = 15.3), including 133 females and 73 males. Descriptive and regression analyses were then carried out. The results of the descriptive analysis revealed that partner phubbing was moderate and was generally consistent between genders and ages. In addition, both sexes identified their relationships as highly satisfactory, although the female sex showed slightly higher scores, as did younger participants, with satisfaction decreasing with age. The results of the regression analysis showed that an increase in partner phubbing is negatively associated with relationship satisfaction and that there is also an inverse relationship between the latter and age. However, no significant moderation of gender and age was identified in this association. These results provide relevant evidence about the negative effects of phubbing in a romantic relationship.
