Abstract(s)
This research study focuses on the issue of child abuse in Guinea-Bissau, which represents a serious social and human rights problem, characterized by multiple forms of physical, psychological, and sexual violence, as well as neglect. The study aims to highlight factors such as extreme poverty, political instability, weak law enforcement, and limitations in the social protection system contribute to child vulnerability. It is possible to observe that cultural practices, such as child labor and certain traditional rituals, increase the risk of abuse and exploitation, harming the physical and emotional development of children as well as their access to education and healthcare. Although Guinea-Bissau has ratified international conventions, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the implementation of effective policies is limited by scarce resources and lack of institutional capacity, as described throughout this study. Through an interview guide with various figures from social, judicial, and governmental areas, the importance of governmental and non-governmental organizations in supporting the prevention and awareness of this issue was demonstrated. Given that there is ambivalence of opinions regarding child abuse, it is intended that in the future information can be created to raise awareness among the Guinean State and society to ensure the full protection of childhood.
