Abstract(s)
The illusion the oceans have the hability to absorve all the pollution has left a long time ago. Since the Navy has a very close contact with the marine environment, it is a matter of constant concern to reduce the environmental impact of ships in their assigned missions. The correct implementation of a Waste Management System on board contributes to the minimization of the ecological footprint, which must be in agreement with National and International regulations, covering the whole process from the collection, separation, type of treatment to the discharge or storage of the waste produced. Considering that the Portuguese Navy has a somewhat aged fleet, the present work intends to know the state and under what conditions is implemented, as far as possible, a Waste Management Plan on the Portuguese Navy. It is also added to this study to find out what the state of garrisons is in terms of training and environmental awareness, due to the fact that waste management is present every day, and in many cases, militaries with responsibilities assigned in this area, are poorly or badly informed on the environmental side. Keywords: Waste Management; Navy and Environment; Pollution of ships; Sea pollution
