Abstract(s)
Periodontal disease is one of the main oral health problems worldwide, with a high incidence and a significant impact on individuals' quality of life. It is characterised by the progressive destruction of dental support tissues, often leading to edentulism. In this context, removable partial dentures (RPDs) are a widely used therapeutic option in the oral rehabilitation of patients with periodontal disease, allowing the restoration of masticatory, aesthetic and phonetic function. The purpose of this study is to develop a narrative review of the literature on the use of removable prostheses in patients with periodontal disease, addressing aspects related to prosthetic planning, biomechanical principles, associated benefits and risks, as well as complications. Through the analysis of available studies, it is concluded that, when properly planned and associated with a rigorous periodontal hygiene and maintenance programme, RPDs represent a viable and effective alternative in the oral rehabilitation of these patients. However, it is essential that the dentist takes into account risk factors, systemic conditions and patient motivation in order to ensure long-term treatment success.
