Abstract(s)
Communication is at the heart of the relationship between nurse and patient, and the nurse is the professional who can best understand the meanings that the patient attributes to their experiences (Travado & Reis, 2015). Therefore, nurses play a key role in communication, and especially in the management of bad news, and it is important to define and value their intervention with the person (Warnock, Foster & Soreny, 2010). Within the scope of the 11th Master's Course in Nursing in the Specialization Area of Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the Specific Area of Oncology Nursing Intervention, this report was prepared, which aims to analyze and reflect the entire path taken during the internship. The internship had the following objectives: to develop specialist nurse skills in the field of communication and management of bad news to the person with oncological disease, as well as to promote the improvement of nursing care in the context of communication and management of bad news to the person with oncological disease. The internship locations, a Hematopoietic Progenitor Transplantation Unit and a Surgical Inpatient Functional Unit, were chosen taking into account the previously identified objectives. As a theoretical framework, Jean Watson's theory of Transpersonal Care was chosen. Watson (2002) argues that through communication with the person, the nurse establishes a relationship, in the sense of helping the person to find meanings for their experiences during their disease course. In order to achieve the aforementioned objectives, I resorted to researching scientific evidence, using instruments found in the research, observing the practice and providing care. Critical reflection was essential in the acquisition of skills and in the elaboration of documents to support the practice in order to promote the improvement of care.
