Abstract(s)
The issue of patient safety has garnered increasing relevance over the last few years and it is considered both a central aspect and a priority in clinical practice. Because accidents are one of the leading causes of death in young children and adolescents all over the world, there arises a prevailing need to evaluate their impact on the patients’ lives, as well as their families’, so as to better our knowledge of how accidents happen and how to prevent them. Safe transport using adequate Retention Systems for Children (SRC) is one of the principal ways through which we can reduce the number of accident-related injuries and deaths. Despite this evidence, there are continued misuses of SRCs that undermine their potential benefits. Due to this, this study intends to analyze possible safety-promoting approaches, particularly those related to education of the population on vehicular and traffic safety as it pertains to SRCs. To this aim, the role of nursing staff specializing in Paediatrics and Child Health (EEESIP) is highlighted as being of particular importance as facilitators of information for child safety and accident prevention. This thesis seeks to clarify the process of learning and acquiring common, EEESIP-specific, and master’s skills, in internship contexts, based upon reflective practice and supported by scientific evidence, within a philosophy of Family Centered and Non-traumatic Care and in Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model. Child health consultation planning, promotion of attachment, parental empowerment, the development of an institutional project in the area of quality and safety, the elaboration of a sectoral procedure, as well as peer training were some of the activities worked upon clinical context and critically analyzed in this report. This learning process has contributed to the acquisition of EEESIP and master’s skills, to the improvement of the quality of care and to lifelong learning.
