Abstract(s)
The most recent refugee crisis, a visible consequence of the conflict in Syria, means that more than one million people are moving from conflict zones to ask for asylum in European Union countries, among which Portugal also receives its refugee quota. Along with the arrival of refugees, and as the pressure grows in some countries, the protest initiatives of right-wing militants increase, and political and social activism of protest against immigration policies and refugees resulted, in some cases, in acts of violence against reception facilities. On the other hand, there is an association between receiving immigrants and increasing crime and insecurity. Therefore, the main objective of this research work on "The role of the Guarda Nacional Republicana in the reception of refugees in Portugal: Case Study of the Comando Territorial de Braga" is to determine the actions to be developed by the Guarda Nacional Republicana in the scope of the receiving communities, as well as refugees themselves, as a means of raising awareness, surveillance and criminal prevention. This research is based on the mixed approach proposed by Bryman (2012), using the qualitative and quantitative approaches in which interviews and questionnaires are data collection instruments, respectively. The scientific method used in this investigation is the hypothetic-deductive, as proposed by Karl Popper, in Sarmento (2013). Through this investigation, it is concluded that refugees reception has altered population sense of security, and that the refugee's sense of security is affected by situations that could be avoided, thus requiring that Guarda Nacional Republicana increases community policing and awareness.
