Abstract(s)
Abstract For many years, the military institution was the biggest development facilitator of Horse Riding in Portugal. Either from the Army or the Republican National Guard (GNR in Portuguese) soldiers attended, and most of the time won, national and international competitions, representing the country, even in the Olympics, with a team composed only of soldiers. In the last few decades this trend has reversed, and today it is very rare to find even one soldier competing in the main national equestrian events. With that in mind, the present Applied Research Paperwork, focuses on the “Adjustment of the Republican National Guard’s Horse Riding to the National Equestrian Reality”, understanding the causes behind the lowering of equestrian participation level, and the solutions to that problem. For that purpose, this paper is divided in two main sections, the first dedicated to a theoretical framework of the subject, by analyzing related bibliographic documents. The s econd consists of the practical section, achieved by semi-direct interviews addressed to a characteristic part of the population strictly related to the theme, and includes investigation methodology, analysis and discussion of the results, and then, the conclusions and recommendations. In the end, it was concluded that several reasons are associated with the lowering of military equestrian participation levels, from the decline of the structure verified during the Colonial War and consequent development of civil horse riding, to the military career management not providing progress as a horse rider and the settlement of necessary foundations and structure in order to develop excellence baselines. However, it is believed that if an investment is done in that sense, the structure can be consolidated. Finally, it is suggested the idea of ending the Cavalry as a “Weapon”, turning it into a specialty, allowing a more profitable management of human resources and means at that specialty disposal. Whereas, it is suggested that the institution to make a strong investment in certain horse riders and respective horses, providing them with all the conditions to succeed in horse riding at top-level, raising the equestrian participation level of the GNR.
