Abstract(s)
Bruxism is a common condition characterized by involuntary teeth clenching or grinding, which can occur both during sleep and wakefulness. This functional disorder is often associated with a range of symptoms, such as tooth wear, orofacial muscle pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and headaches. Over the years, various therapeutic approaches have been suggested for the management of bruxism, with occlusal stabilization splints being one of the most widely used interventions in clinical practice. Occlusal stabilization splints are intraoral devices that redistribute occlusal forces, provide muscle relaxation, and protect teeth from wear. These splints have been widely used for bruxism treatment. Historically, their use began in the mid-20th century, with scientific evidence suggesting benefits in reducing orofacial pain and other bruxismrelated symptoms. However, there are still controversies regarding their real effectiveness in more severe cases, and further studies are needed to consolidate their therapeutic role. This narrative review aims to critically evaluate the effectiveness of occlusal stabilization splints in reducing bruxism symptoms by analyzing the available literature and discussing the limitations of existing studies. The importance of this topic lies in the high prevalence of bruxism in the population and the significant impact this condition has on oral health and patients’ quality of life. Moreover, a better understanding of the mechanisms of action and efficacy of these splints can help guide more efficient therapeutic strategies.
