| dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Mandibular edentulism severely affects quality of life, and conventional complete dentures often suffer from limitations in terms of stability and retention. Although the two-implant-retained overdenture is considered the gold standard, there are various restrictions – such as financial, systemic or anatomical factors – that make its placement unfeasible. Development: The use of a single implant placed in the mandibular midline (symphysis) emerges as a minimally invasive and cost-effective alternative. Acting as a central fulcrum, the implant helps resist dislodgement forces, ensuring a substantial improvement in masticatory efficiency compared to conventional dentures. This rehabilitation has survival rates exceeding 95% and substantially increases patient satisfaction. However, due to rotational movements, there is a greater concentration of forces, requiring frequent maintenance due to the rapid wear of the retention matrices and an increased risk of fracture of the prosthetic base. Conclusion: Overdentures retained by a single implant represent an inclusive, safe and cost-effective therapeutic solution for more vulnerable populations. Despite the need for greater clinical maintenance, they mitigate the impact of edentulism and improve patients overall quality of life. | eng |
