Na segunda metade do século xix, foi recorrente a participação de forças
europeias em guerras contra nativos com o fim de impor a autoridade colonial,
havia sensação de insegurança, principalmente no sul de Angola em relação aos
britânicos e da rivalidade que existia com a Alemanha sobre interesses das possessões
portuguesas em África, visto que, a fraca implantação administrativa, militar e a
extensão de fronteiras faziam com que estes territórios fossem alvos de recorrentes
interesses militares, económicos e políticos. A população nativa resistia aos esforços
de uma ocupação e pacificação portuguesa, principalmente nas proximidade com as
possessões alemãs no sul de Angola.
Apesar das dificuldades financeiras que Portugal vivia no fim do século xix
e no inicio do século xx, esta situação não constituiu um impedimento para a demonstração da autoridade no controlo dos territórios, da população e na exploração
económica.

The native population resisted the efforts of a Portuguese occupation and pacification, mainly in the proximity to the German possessions in the south of Angola. Despite the financial difficulties that Portugal was experiencing at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, It did not constitute an impediment to the demonstration of authority in the control of territories, population and economic exploitation. The Navy was always directly linked to the Portuguese possessions in Africa, carrying out operations such as monitoring and reprimanding the slave trade along the West Coast of Africa, planning and carrying out geographical and scientific explorations in the hinterland of Angola, and also in the transport of expeditionary military that will carry out pacification campaigns that will consolidate the affirmation of the Portuguese administration in Angola.
