This study examines the potential associations between the growing omnipresence of the digital world in human communication and its effects on individual behavior, particularly regarding patterns of social media dependency, increased engagement with smartphones, and experiences of alienation or loss of meaning—manifested, for instance, in social media burnout and the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). Drawing from a review of the existing literature on each of these variables, appropriate assessment instruments were selected, and a questionnaire survey was subsequently developed to collect data from a convenience sample (n=183). Beyond indicating greater exposure to the risks associated with excessive use of these technologies among younger users, a more detailed analysis revealed a significant positive association between measures of social anxiety and alienation (FoMO and social media burnout) and levels of smartphone and social media dependency, as well as increasing time spent using digital technologies. Finally, the study offers a set of recommendations aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of excessive exposure to the digital environment.
