Abstract(s)
The following internship report is integrated in the master’s degree for Medical-Surgical Nursing, from the nursing school São José de Cluny, with the purpose of revealing the development of common and specific competences of the nurse specialist in medical-surgical nursing in the area of nursing to a person in a critical situation, culminating with the report of the acquired master qualifications. The clinical practices took place in emergency and intensive care services, integrated in the curricular units Internship I - Urgency, Internship II - Intensive Care (accreditation was required and approved for this curricular unit) and Internship III - Option of the Master's Degree in Nursing Medical-surgical. Structured in three chapters, it highlights the learning process through critical-reflexive analysis related to specialized nursing care for the person in a critical situation, victim of catastrophe or multi-victim emergency in the context of a peripheral emergency, in an integrated perspective of specialized nursing care. The catastrophes are unpredictable events and their management is assumed to be complex and with direct implications for the provision of health care, namely in the emergency department . Nurses are in the first line of response to these situations, playing a crucial role in intervening in these situations. The lack of knowledge of their role and the absence of an action plan, as well as training and education programs, influence the effectiveness and efficiency of the given response. In this context emerges the need for a planned intervention, in a systematic and integrated way, which allows a quick and efficient response. The nurses, by the International Council of Nurses, are considered key players, and it is crucial that they are endowed with knowledge and experience, allowing them to develop competences in order to act correctly and in a timely manner in the occurrence of these situations. Thus, the nurse specialist in medical-surgical nursing in the area of nursing to the person in critical situation, assumes a leading role in the dynamism of the response in emergency, exception and catastrophe situations, from conception to action, also passing through the elaboration of response plans to catastrophe.
