Abstract(s)
This study aims to investigate the constraints and various influences that a diverse set of historical figures (Designers and Architects, Artists, Political leaders and others) exerted in the design of the study plans of the first regular course in Design in Portugal, taking into account how this influenced the formation of the discipline and the Designers. This dissertation focuses mainly on the development of the study plan for Design at IADE, over the period of time since 1986 — the year in which Portugal joined the European Union and thus covering the beginning of the Bologna Process — to one of the most recent turning points during the year of 2014. The study plans of a wide range of academic years are analyzed and compared over the established time frame, highlighting all the relevant details for the research during the process, namely a detailed comparative analysis of the design curriculum, of which the subjects are involved. The depth of this analysis allowed us to take stock of what the pros and cons of implementing the Bologna Process were in the curriculum in question, together with the highlighting of the changes in Design training and the skills of the newly licensed Designer.
