Abstract(s)
The Portuguese Naval Academy for more than 175 years has asserted itself as a school of excellence in the preparation of the Officers for the Portuguese Navy. With the organizational dynamics, it is important to identify the competencies that could benefit from better development along the academic path. Therefore, one of the goals was to identify the nontechnical skills that characterize not only a Portuguese Navy Officer but also the officers of the Armed Forces, focusing on communication and leadership. As such, it was created a model that focus on developing the leadership and communication profile that the Portuguese Navy Officers should have to achieve better results with the teams they lead or present information to. This was done through behavioural modelling and the main purpose was to guarantee that the entire academic path has a controlled evolution over the students’ competencies guaranteeing that they dominate the competencies of leadership and communication. The model allowed to evaluate and develop the intended behaviours on a selected group of students through evaluation activities which led to the identification of the gap between the actual behaviours and the intended behaviours. Through development activities and feedback, it was possible to enhance the behaviours of the students who had more difficulties reaching the levels that the students who had more talent revealed initially. The introduction of Role play, feedback and modern teaching methods allowed the evaluation and development of the behaviours leading to the creation of a new curricular unit. The conclusions obtained show the creation of a model that controls and guarantees the development of the intended behaviours to prepare confident leaders and communicators so that they can obtain better performances with the teams they lead.
