This report is part of the first Master's Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing, focusing on Nursing to the person in a critical situation at the Escola Superior de Saúde de Santa Maria in collaboration with the Escola Superior de Enfermagem São José de Cluny. It is entitled "Caring for the potential organ donor – from the journey taken to the development of specialized nursing master's competencies" and aims to achieve the following objectives: demonstrate the development of common and specific skills of the nurse specializing in medical-surgical nursing in the area of critical care nursing; highlight the competencies of critical and reflexive analysis towards obtaining the master's degree; demonstrate high levels of clinical judgment and decision-making, characteristic of the nurse specialist and master in Medical-Surgical Nursing. The development of competencies took place through clinical teachings distributed between three different curricular units: clinical teaching I conducted in a multipurpose emergency department; clinical teaching II carried out in a multipurpose intensive care unit; and the internship with a report. The latter included two distinct modules: module 1 - clinical teaching III, which took place in a multipurpose intensive care unit and ECMO reference center, and module 2, related to clinical option, divided into two distinct contexts, one in a pre-hospital context and the other in an intensive care medicine service specialized in neurocritical patients. The elaboration of this document, based on the regulations of common and specific competencies of the nurse specializing in medical-surgical nursing within the critical care nursing scope, relies on a descriptive and critical-reflexive methodology experienced through various clinical teachings. It emphasizes evidence-based practice in caring for critically ill patients, specifically potential organ donors.
