Swimming in Portugal is made up of several age groups, including the Master category (+25 years). This study aims to understand the motivations that make these athletes choose swimming as their sport of choice. This research also seeks to understand the restrictions that respondents feel in their daily lives when practicing this sport at the Master level. The starting question for this study was: “What are the motivations and constraints of Master swimmers to practice swimming in Portugal?” This study is differentiated by the target audience in question and by the search for reasons and restrictions for the practice of a sport throughout life, being framed in a context of Serious Leisure Career “systematic pursuit of an amateur activity, which the participants find so interesting, making a career centered on the acquisition and expression of their skills (Stebbins R. A., 1992). For this study, a survey was conducted among athletes from Portuguese clubs participating in the 2025 National Masters Winter Championship in Torres Vedras. (2025, january 24th - 26th). Regarding motivations for swimming, it can be seen that respondents seek to constantly improve their physical fitness and technical skills. Master athletes do not seek social recognition, but rather an experience that sparks enthusiasm and pleasure. It appears that athletes do not feel financial restrictions when it comes to swimming. On the other hand, the athlete's available time is limited and they try to organize themselves to include swimming in their weekly routine. The master swimmers demonstrate a very practical and adaptable approach to organizing their training and do not demonstrate the need to significantly change their lifestyle or seek the approval of others to maintain this sport. The master athlete's self-motivation is extremely high and they demonstrate that they are aware that they need this sport to take care of them well-being
