Abstract(s)
In order to get the best of Olive plant row of Herdade de Alcobaça, situated in freguesia de S.Vicente e Ventosa (Elvas), the agricultural exploration was studied and the 398,53ha of olives characterized, through the description of planting techniques used between 2004 and 2008; quantity and quality of olives produced in the fields were also analysed as well as the oil obtained in the olive press of the Herdade, which has an assembly line of production of 100t/day. Generally speaking, the row of olive plants in Herdade de Alcobaça has a good functioning. Most of the 10 olive fields where the “Picual” variety dominates, have a good production (from 5000 to 7000km/ha); they are correctly implanted (204 trees/ha in 7x7m) and are in an acceptable way, executing many of the practices refered in the norms of integrated production. The functioning of the olive press is correct, giving an answer in the adequated time to transformation (which reached almost 2.400.000kg of olives and 350.000kg of oil, in 2005/2006); thus obtaining quality olive oils, well accepted in the market, and so, without any commercial difficulty. However, some situations or processes were observed that can be improved, in such a way as to reduce the costs and/or increase the productivity (and consequently the profits), improving this way the natural resources and reducing the environmental impact. So, 9 proposals are presented to apply to the olive press, which if they are properly done, will bring substantial improvements on the functioning of firm, developing the sustainability of the row of the olive plants in Herdade of Alcobaça.
