Conscious breathing, particularly the use of breathing techniques, has been recommended as a strategy to promote health and well-being, integrated in a positive pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum experience. The project developed was based on Betty Neuman's Systems Model, framing conscious breathing as a means of strengthening women's defences during this period of increased vulnerability. This report reflects a training programme that aimed to: develop skills in scientific research; contribute to the advancement of knowledge in nursing; develop specialised nursing care based on scientific evidence; collaborate in programmes for the continuous improvement of care; provide specialised nursing care to women throughout their reproductive cycle; and promote conscious breathing during pregnancy, labour and postpartum. Throughout this process, it was possible to develop mastery skills, both common and specific to midwives, in six contexts. In all of them, awareness was raised among pregnant women and new mothers about their breathing patterns. Two breathing techniques applicable to this period were taught and practised: diaphragmatic breathing and prolonged exhalation breathing. Positive results were observed in the women's capacity for self-regulation and self-control, and the need to develop primary research in this area was recognised. Obtaining a Master's degree and the title of Specialist in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing will enable further study of the subject, with the potential for health gains for pregnant women and new mothers.
