A descrição e reflexão crítica
This report presents the work developed throughout the professional internship carried out within the framework of the Master’s Degree in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing, held in a differentiated perinatal support hospital, between October 2024 and June 2025. It provides a reflection on the conception of care within the specialty, grounded on three fundamental pillars: professional competence, evidence-based practice, and respect for the care recipient. The aim of this report is to demonstrate, through four clinical cases, that every woman is unique, endowed with inherent dignity and the right to self-determination; that the promotion of a healthy pregnancy is essential to ensure a physiological birth; that physiological labour is the safest and most beneficial option for both the woman and the fetus/newborn; that adopting a paradigm centred on promoting the ability to “cope with” rather than exclusively “relieve” labour pain represents a significant contribution to women’s empowerment; and that clinical communication between the Specialist Nurse in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing / Midwife and the care recipient is a critical success factor. The description and critical reflection prompted by each clinical case served as an opportunity to illustrate my understanding of what it means to care within the scope of Maternal and Obstetric Healh. Regarding the development of research competencies, a Narrative Literature Review was conducted focusing on the specialised care needs of pregnant women following a fetal disease diagnosis. The findings reveal a lack of investment in this field, with scarce evidence specifically centred on women’s perspectives. Identifying and understanding the needs of pregnant women after a fetal disease diagnosis should therefore constitute the starting point for designing early intervention strategies aimed at improving health outcomes for the mother–infant dyad.
