Abstract(s)
Dementia is a syndrome characterised by a deterioration of the cognitive function, with a loss of motor ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). This dependence in ADLs requires the presence of a caregiver, who is usually a direct relative, who needs to be trained to perform his or her new role with mastery. Therapeutic education allows for empowered caregivers, thus improving the quality of life of the patient, while preventing the hospitalisation and institutionalisation of the person with dementia. Thus, the Nurse Specialist in Rehabilitation Nursing (NSRN) intervenes to enhance the knowledge and skills of the person with dementia and the family caregiver. Thus, the main purpose of the work developed during the optional internship and presented in this report was to understand the needs of family caregivers, according to the stage of development of the person with dementia, so as to develop an action protocol that would allow standardizing the care provided by the NSRN in an Integrated Long term Care Team (LTCT) regarding the empowerment of family caregivers. The methodology used in this report was a quality improvement project, as a professional intervention strategy, where an in-service training was carried out based on an integrative literature review, as well as the development of an action protocol.
