Abstract(s)
This master’s thesis focuses on the life style of military personnel deployed on board the class Tridente conventional submarines for longer periods on patrol missions, and intends to be a first impulse in analysing the possible effect those missions have directly or indirectly on their health. Portuguese Navy’s submarines are regularly engaged in patrols, for instance, in national waters, national interest waters and in missions outside the area. For a better understanding of the real impact of such missions, where circumstances for maintaining the individual general physical condition are unfavourable, and in order to draw conclusions on manageable solutions to this problem, specific biometric indicators are carefully studied and analysed. Within the scope of the study design, a mission was identified as propitious to carry out the research in question. This mission accomplished by the submarine Arpão lasted 60 days, between the months of October and November 2017. However, for the purposes of this master's thesis, another smaller deployment was also used with the goal to test the data collection process, which took place during the month of July, for 5 days. The data was collected through daily loggings of submariners' activities on board, e.g., through the number of hours of sleep, daily mood, physical activity and its intensity, or even nourishment throughout the day. At the same time, anxiety questionnaires taken before and after the mission were filled out in order to obtain data on psychological factors that could affect the submariners. The data was later analysed using regression and clustering techniques, thus responding to the impact they present on physical condition and general well-being of the military personnel on board the class Tridente conventional submarines.
