The dissertation “Communication as a strategic element in Safety and Risk Management for Events: the case study of the Festival Músicas do Mundo” has the main objective of showing the increasing importance of communication and safety in the context of festivals, as far as promotion, organization and relation with public entities are concerned. The main topic of this research is to understand how these two tools are applied in festivals nationwide; I have therefore decided to investigate the hypotheses advanced in the context of the Festival Músicas do Mundo, in Sines. The theoretical framework focuses on communication events, with special emphasis on risk management processes. The intent of this phase of research is to cast some light on each of the subjects, and demonstrate how these two tools can work harmoniously for the success of the event. The chosen research method was based on a qualitative analysis of data collected in the 15-year commemorative edition of the festival, which hosted around 100 000 spectators. The data collected were based on two main methods: questionnaire survey and interview survey. The results of research show that most respondents still lack general awareness on the importance of security and safety in music festivals. Likewise, the festival organization should also polish up many of the edges on the event’ safety and implement measures that bridged identified gaps. Finally, it is important to stress the idea that the organizations in charge of music festivals should be more concerned with the safety of their audience and not only with providing a lifetime experience, since a safe environment can prevent many unexpected risks.
