Abstract(s)
Midwives are reference professionals in assisting women throughout the various phases of the reproductive cycle. The learning process and skill development was concluded by the elaboration of this report as a part of the Internship made in the scope of the 10th Master's Degree Course in Maternal Health and Obstetrics of the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Lisboa. The Nursing Theory that supported this report and the care providing was Katharine Kolcaba's Conceptual Model, which prioritizes comfort as the expected outcome of nursing care. This model was chosen because it was appropriate to the central issue chosen to guide this journey. The methodological options were based on evidence-based practice initiated by a Scoping Review aimed at mapping the scientific evidence on the topic. The research question was "What are the benefits of the combined use of hydrotherapy and pilates ball in the 1st stage of labor?" and the EBSCO host platform was used for evidence search through 3 selected databases. Several activities were performed throughout the clinical teachings in order to apply the knowledge taken from the Scoping Review. Due to the limitations imposed by the pandemic period experienced during the internship in the delivery room, applicability was quite difficult, so questionnaires were developed to collect some feedback on the topic and its applicability. These strategies have proved through questionnaires to professionals and conversations with women in labor to be very well accepted and to be viable options in the promotion of comfort and pain relief. They are easy to apply, available in most Portuguese maternity hospitals and at low cost.
