Abstract(s)
The impact of changing demographic dynamics demanded a rebalancing of social interactions and fostered the need to characterize the phenomenon and rethink the role and value of the elderly in society. As such, in the century when work saw its main role being shared with leisure, aging gained prominence and renewed its orientations making an important part of everyday life fall on the occupation of free time, anchoring itself in its study to understanding of the uses and customs of the elderly population with regard to cultural practices. It is in this context, that the study - “Aging with autonomy” Lifestyles of the elderly who are not in institutions - that the central problem of this investigation finds its focus and seeks to respond to insufficient sociological information, demarcating itself from merely physical perspectives or psychological and focusing more fully on the cultural and social behaviors of this group. Therefore, we intend to characterize the different forms of autonomy, self-realization and pleasure in carrying out the activities of this social group. Identifying what uses of free time and space, also assessing constraints and motivations. The sample consists of 50 retired and non-institutionalized elderly people from Alter do Chão. Of these, 29 are women and 21 are men, both over the age of 65. The data were collected through the application of a questionnaire. The findings essentially revealed that the elderly have a dual view of the aging process; that free time is a fundamental element in the experiences of this group, promoting the maintenance of various activities of a personal and social nature; and that socio-cultural factors have a categorical influence on their daily customs.
