Abstract(s)
Over the last decades the way animals are treated by humans has been widely discussed, as it is considered that they regarded as more than a source of production, but their well being has become an ethical concern, which in turn influences productivity and also the quality of the products they provide. Animal Welfare is essentially the care men give to animals, creating conditions that satisfy their needs, contributing to a satisfactory quality of life. The wide spreading of such principles has lead us to this study, which aims to know in a more objective manner the perception Santa Maria Isle producers have concerning animal welfare. Therefore a multi-item questionnaire was developed and applied to all Santa Maria Isle producers who own over 10 cattle units. Through results analysis it became apparent that producers have only empiric knowledge and also the need for more technical training, with emphasis on legislation and on directives that regulate animal welfare. In light of the found results, we point out a few suggestions, which may contribute to the awareness and motivation of Santa Maria Isle producers in what concerns Animal Welfare.
