Abstract(s)
Nurses play a fundamental role in preparing for childbirth by providing guidance and support to the significant other and the pregnant woman, within the scope of the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, as well as the challenges and responsibilities that parenthood entails. The pregnant woman's significant person is defined as a trusted person who provides emotional and physical support during labor. Choosing a significant person is important, as the presence of someone with whom the pregnant woman has a close relationship and considers trustworthy can increase the feeling of security and comfort during labor. In the present study, it’s crucial to identify the care needs of the significant person in the context of preparation for childbirth, as it allows EEESMO to offer more adjusted and personalized care, contributing to a more positive experience. The study aims to contribute to the quality of specialized care in Maternal Health and Obstetric Nursing, by identifying the care needs of the significant person, in order to prepare to support women during labor and delivery, through of the Plan to support you during childbirth model, as well as understanding whether this model provides the relevant data for diagnoses. This is a mixed, descriptive, exploratory, and cross-sectional study, where the participants (n = 23) were all the woman’s birth partners who, from December 2023 to March 2024, were interested in preparing for childbirth and who have been identified as a significant person by the pregnant woman referred to a Local Health Unit (ULS) in the North of the country. From the study it emerges that, except in one case, the companions chosen are male, corresponding to a partner (father of the child). As main results, the study revealed that the significant people who participated in the study were able to attribute “superpowers” and words of empowerment and resilience to women. It was also concluded that the majority of participants considered it “Very important” to contribute to a positive birth experience. Regarding the level of preparation perceived by the significant person to support the woman during childbirth, the importance of investing in the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out their roles and responsibilities was highlighted. This plan allows the significant person to be guided about their role and responsibilities as companions when they arrive at the delivery room. This guidance contributes to a positive experience for the significant person by increasing feelings of trust and the perceived value of their role.
