Abstract(s)
Pharmacists are the patient first contact with a health professional whenever they have a problem, as pharmacies are an easily accessible place for the all population. The role of the pharmacist is based on a relationship of trust with patients, helping them in the search for the best results for themselves, promoting their health and well-being. Counseling always benefits the patient, providing answers to their doubts and needs to improve and preserve their health and quality of life. The current situation of Portuguese pharmacies is related to the various legislative changes such as the sale of OTC outside pharmacies, price reductions, the liberalization of pharmacy ownership, the dynamization of the generic market and the increase in costs, which lead to a deterioration in the financial organization of these establishments, compromising the sustainability of pharmacies. Dry eye is estimated to be the most vulgar ocular surface disease. It is associated with several factors and is described by a loss of tear film homeostasis and successive ocular symptoms, such as hyperosmolarity and tear film instability, inflammation and damage to the ocular surface. It displays numerous risk factors such as age, sex, different medications and comorbidities and certain behaviors adopted by individuals. The main objective of treatment is to treat symptoms according to the severity of the disease. However, the pharmacist must have knowledge of eye health as he has the responsibility to decide and advise on the best solution for each individual who seeks him, according to the severity of his signs and symptoms.
