Abstract(s)
The statement of women in a professional activity such as design - a discipline still in the process of institutionalization in the years 1960- 70 - had its seminal expression in the first Portuguese design exhibition held in 1971, going in parallel with the acceptance of design as a field. The exhibition confirmed a process associated with the INII - National Institute of Industrial Research - to show factories the potential of design and establish a co-creation environment between them. Bringing design to the public was also a goal, thanks to the fair success of the show and, after two years, the 2nd portuguese design exhibition was held. The goal was to hold a new exhibition every two years, although this didn’t went through due to the changing times brought by April 25, 1974. Considering that the study and mapping of the projects developed by women designers in these exhibitions of 1971 and 1973 has not yet been systematically elaborated, this thesis intends to contribute to remove from the shadow the names and works of these professionals, continuing the studies started by the European MoMoWo project: Women's Creativity since the Modern Movement (2014-2018). After analyzing the reference contributions made by pioneer women from Portuguese and foreign design, the women designers who were part of the 1971 and 1973 exhibitions were selected, as well as theassessment and analysis of the products presented by these professionals. In addition to the theoretical research work, three interviews were conducted with three designers who were present at the exhibitions, and one of the interviewees was also one of the collaborators in the execution of the two exhibitions.
