Abstract(s)
Introduction: Aging is a natural process that can negatively affect the perioral region, compromising the aesthetics and self-esteem of individuals. Dentistry professionals have adopted different therapeutic approaches to deal with the changes resulting from facial aging. One such approach is facial filling with hyaluronic acid, a minimally invasive technique that aims to improve both the function and appearance of the perioral region. Aim: To investigate the benefits of hyaluronic acid filling in the soft tissues of the perioral area in people with anatomical aging in the lower third of the face, as an approach to mitigate the effects of aging in the perioral region and improve patients' facial aesthetics, self-esteem, and quality of life. Methodology: A research study was conducted by means of a integrative literature review, following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) method. The review covered a period from January 2009 to April 2023 and 16 relevant articles were selected from MEDLINE Complete, CINAHL Complete and MedicLatina databases, using the mnemonic PI(C)O to refine the research question. Results: The main results highlighted that facial filler with hyaluronic acid improved the aesthetic appearance of the face, increased patients' self-esteem, and satisfaction, and provided a better quality of life. However, a poor level of methodological evidence was observed in the selected studies, highlighting the need for future research with greater methodological relevance. Conclusion: In the context of the dental profession, this thesis may contribute to the development of curricula and educational programs, emphasizing the importance of orofacial harmonization as a core competency for dental practitioners. This strengthens the training of professionals and encourages constant updating, ensuring that they can offer advanced treatments grounded in a practice based on scientific evidence.
