Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the readaptation and reorganization of health systems to respond to the health challenges that have emerged globally. These changes have burdened healthcare systems and professionals. Although the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on the health of healthcare professionals is already known, in part, little is known about the specific impact on nurses specializing in rehabilitation nursing and the specialized care provided. Objectives: With this study, we aimed to 1) characterize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Specialist Nurses in Rehabilitation Nursing (SNRN); 2) characterize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on specialized rehabilitation nursing care available to populations; 3) characterize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the technical-scientific updating strategies of the SNRN; 4) make information available to decision-makers for better management of human/professional resources; and, 5) make information available to decision-makers for better management of specialized nursing care for populations. Methodology: We performed an observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. We used a non-probability, convenience sample of nurses specialized in rehabilitation nursing, members of the Portuguese Association of Rehabilitation Nurses who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected through an online questionnaire. We proceeded to descriptive and inferential analysis. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact in the last two years and will impact our future. Regarding the impact perceived during the period of the pandemic by the SNRN, we verified a negative impact on the dimensions ātime for friendsā and ātime for personal leisureā, and a positive impact on the dimensions ārelationship with co-workersā and āavailability of Personal protective equipment. In the future, there is a perception of a negative impact on the dimensions "bureaucratic activities", "personal health", "time for friends", and "time for personal leisure", and a positive impact on the dimensions "availability of individual protective equipmentā and āorganization of physical space in the workplaceā. The COVID-19 pandemic also presented a change in the clinical complexity of patients. There was an increase in complexity in ārespiratory patientsā, with āchanges in the ability to self-careā and āchanges in the ability to self-manage the diseaseā. Overall satisfaction, with the various dimensions of specialized care provided, decreased for most nurses, however, when we individually analysed the dimension of care provided to patients in the ārespiratory areaā, satisfaction increased for part of the SNRN. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a need to use learning resources by healthcare professionals, with webinars and scientific journals being the most used resources and with the most positive impact for nurses. Regarding the learning modalities preferred by nurses in the future, the face-to-face and mixed regimen were the ones that obtained higher average values. The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the different dimensions studied, highlighting that head/manager nurses have a more positive perception of this impact compared to other nurses, both in the period of the pandemic and for the future. The pandemic had the biggest negative impact on the SNRN on the time available to their family. In the dimension of satisfaction with the quality of care, the most negative impact was perceived by SNRN who ceased to perform specialist functions and in relation to the provision of nursing care to people with elimination disorders. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact in different aspects on nurses specializing in rehabilitation nursing and on the specialized care provided. The knowledge of this impact serves as a guideline for the implementation of changes in the work dynamics and the structures of the services, with a view to greater quality and safety of care, as well as greater satisfaction of the SNRN with the specialized care available to the populations
